Groups

  • The Groups Plugin page allows you to manage all the Groups in your network, determine the Global and Member Level Settings for your network, and manage Categories.

    Manage Groups

In your Admin area, go to Plugins > Groups.

Select Groups to view or delete. They are categorized by “Title”, “Owner”, “Views”, and “Date”.

    Enable HTML

The ability to add styling or links or media to a post with the use of HTML tags can be allowed or not allowed within any of the Group discussion posts. If you choose to Allow HTML tags in your Group discussions, you will still need to set which HTML tags are allowable in the Member Level Settings section.

Make sure you click the “Save Changes” button ( seen above) when done changing settings.

This option will allow members of this level to see all Groups on the site no matter what level of privacy the Group has been set to. Selecting the "Yes, allow viewing and subscriptions of groups" will allow members of this level to view and subscribe to all Groups which apply to members of this level (as in they are not set to Group members only). Selecting the "No, do not allow groups to be viewed." option will not allow members of this level to view any Group pages or see the Groups menu item in any menus on the site.

     Allow Creation of Groups

You can decide whether the members of the selected member level are allowed to edit or delete certain Groups or any Groups at all.

The "Yes, allow members to comment on groups" will only allow members of this level to comment on items within Groups they have access to. Selecting the "No, do not allow members to comment on groups." will not allow the members of this level to comment on any items in any Groups.

When your members create a Group, they are given options for Group Privacy, Group Posting Options, Photo Upload Options, and Event Creation Options. These options can be determined by you. For example, you can select them all so that during Group creation members can choose to have "everyone" view their Groups, post comments, upload photos, and create events, or have "friends only" view their Groups, post comments, upload photos, and create events.

    Group Privacy

Set the options for who can view Groups they make. Such as:
“Everyone” which allows guests and logged in users to see the group.
“Registered Members” which allows all logged in members of your community to see the group.
“Members Only” which allows only members of the group to see it.

    Group Posting Options

Posting option privacy is as follows:
“Registered Members” allows all logged in members of your community to post to the group.
“All Members” allows all members of the group to post to it.
“Officers and Owner Only” allows just the officers and owner of the group to post to it.

    Default Group Cover Photo

This setting allows you to set a global group cover photo that will show until the user uploads their own cover photo. You'll first need to upload the cover photo in the File & Media Manager. You can then click the drop down shown below to select from one of your uploaded images.

    Allow HTML in posts?

By default the ability to use any HTML in discussion posts is disabled. If you would like to allow a member to use HTML in their discussion posts, you will need to list the tags you would like to allow in the field below. An example would be: a, b, img, font, etc

Note: there is still a pre-programmed list in the source code that limits the allowed HTML tags in an entry. If you would like to see the list of forbidden tags, please refer to the /application/libraries/Engine/Filter/Html.php file. These tags were forbidden to prevent the corruption of the site's styling; however, if you would like to take any of the tags off the list, you are more than welcome to at your own risk.

Make sure you click the “Save Changes” button (seen above) when done changing settings.

    Categories

Create categories if you want to allow your users to categorize their Groups. In order to get to the Categories page, click on the "Categories" tab in the Groups’ menu tabs.

This feature is useful if you want to list all of your members' Groups. If you have no categories, your users will not be given the option of assigning a category. Another great use for categories would be to create a category just for your Group, so that it would be easily searchable in whichever add-ons you have available for your Group such as Photo Albums.

    Creating a New Category

    1. To create a new Category, click on the "Add New Category" button to the left of the Category list. This shows the Blog categories but it is the same process.
    2. Enter a name for your new Category and if this is a sub-category, select the Parent category. If this is a main category, leave the selection at "None" for Parent category.

    Editing a Category

To edit a Category Name, click on the "edit" link under the "Options" column for the Category whose name you want to change.

It will open a popup just like the one used to create a Category. When you have finished making your changes to the Category Name, click on "Edit Category" to save your changes.

    Deleting a Category

To delete a Category, click on the "delete" link under the "Options" column for the Category that you want to delete.

It will open a popup asking if you are sure you want to delete the following Category. To delete the Category, click on the "Delete" button.
